Colouring Our World

Colour Our World

The students are very familiar with food colouring and how we use it to change things such as the water in our water centre, icing for cupcakes and so forth.  They love colour and painting as well so our ECE student teacher Ms. Bryer thought it would be a great activity to have students experiment with food colouring, coffee filters and eye droppers.  Besides being a great way to work on fine motor skills developing a "pinching grasp", it was a great activity to explore colour mixing as well.

We are always interested in the process that children use in their design of their creations.  For some, the process is quick and easy and they are done in a few minutes ready to move on to the next activity. For others, it is a very slow and deliberate process, where each drop is placed in a meaningful way.

The Name of Our Blog

Perhaps you are wondering why we've named our classroom blog such an unusual name.  Well we thought that we needed to find a unique name for our new group of children.

Although we have many returning students, we have many new JKs and also quite a few SK students that are new to our class.

So a new name was definitely in order for our blog.

Our name evolved from an ongoing joke last year that the teachers were the "mother hens" and our students, the little chickens.  It was a source of amusement last year and the children found it to be quite hilarious at times.

So, there you have the origin of our name.

New year, new children, new blog!

Our Arrival Activities

"Starting Our Day in a Positive Way!"

Every day, upon arrival, there are many jobs that the students do independently in order to be ready for the day.  As much as we can, we encourage independence and a sense of responsibility with each and every child.  We nurture an "I can do it" spirit in our classroom.

You can help to foster your child's independence each and every day by :

-Arriving on the playground at the bell so that s/he has time to complete all arrival activities
-Being sure to return your child's Note Tote back to his/her backpack each morning before school arrives
-When late, allow your child to get take of his/her jobs independently

OUR ARRIVAL ACTIVITIES

We hang up our coats and backpacks in
our cubbies.
We put on our inside shoes.

Library books go in the library bin.

 Note Totes are very important.
We put our Note Totes in the bin.
If we forgot them, we let Mrs. Stefani know.
That's our responsibility!

We find our names on the table.

We print our names in the sign in book.
Then we put our name card in the
yellow basket.

We find our photograph on the carpet.

Then we put our photo on the
"How are you feeling today?" board.
It lets our teachers know how we are today.

Then we find a book on the carpet.

We are ready to begin our day!

Our Wonderful Students

In our class, we have 27 wonderful boys and girls.  It makes for a busy day but lots of friendships in the making.  One of our first goals is to learn the names of all classmates and teachers.  We've been playing lots of name games and singing name songs in order to learn the names of classmates.

The children who were in our class last year of course, have an advantage since there were many returning students.  The J.K.s have far more of a challenge.

Please excuse a few "nervous" faces.  Although they smile all the time while playing, a few students were a bit nervous to have their photographs taken.  I guess they'll need to work on that for Picture Day!

How many of these beautiful faces can your child name?
